Automatic Transmission

  1. Check vehicle for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) using scan tool. If DTC P0720 is displayed, go to appropriate diagnosis and repair procedure. See TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICE section. Check fuse No. 4 (7.5-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. Check for continuity between instrument cluster connector "B" terminal B2 and body ground. If preliminary checks are okay, go to next step.
  2. Raise one front wheel off ground and support. Disconnect 22-pin connector "B" from instrument cluster. Connect positive lead of DVOM to connector "B" terminal B2 and negative lead to ground. Place vehicle shift lever in "N" (neutral) position. Rotate elevated wheel and monitor DVOM reading. If reading varies between zero and 5 volts, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If reading does not vary between zero and 5 volts, go to next step.
  3. Locate PCM 32-pin connector under passenger's toe board. Backprobe PCM 32-pin connector terminal No. 9 (Orange wire) with positive lead and connect negative lead to ground. Place vehicle shift lever in "N" (neutral) position. Rotate elevated wheel and monitor DVOM reading. If reading varies between zero and 5 volts, go to next step. If reading does not vary between zero and 5 volts, repair open in Orange wire between PCM, cruise control and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Disconnect PCM 32-pin connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between PCM 32-pin connector terminal No. 9 and ground. If continuity is indicated, repair short to ground in Orange wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If continuity is not indicated, check for damaged or loose connectors, corroded terminals or a faulty PCM. Repair or replace as necessary.
