Retrieving Codes

NOTE: Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may also be referred to as problem code.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position and ensure ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon indicator light illuminates. Restart engine and check ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon indicator light. If ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon indicator light goes off, system is okay at this time. If ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon indicator light remains illuminated, go to next step.
  2. CAUTION: Before starting engine, disconnect jumper wire from service check connector, or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will stay on with engine running.
  3. Connect a jumper wire between service check connector terminals located under right side of glove box. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Record blinking frequency of ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon indicator light. Blinking frequency indicates Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If light does not flash DTC, go to TEST B: ABS WARNING LIGHT REMAINS ON, BUT DOES NOT FLASH TROUBLE CODES  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. First flashing sequence indicates main code of DTC, and second number indicates sub code of DTC. See Fig 1 . A one-second pause separates main and sub codes. Total of 3 DTCs can be set at one time. There is a 5-second pause between DTCs.
  5. To recheck DTC sequence, turn ignition off for a few seconds and then turn it back on. After codes are retrieved, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
  6. ABS control unit can indicate 3 DTCs (one, two or three problems). If ANTILOCK, ABS or ABS icon indicator light does not illuminate, see TEST A: ABS WARNING LIGHT DOES NOT ILLUMINATE  under SYSTEM TESTS. After the repair is completed, disconnect ALB or ABS 2,3 (20-amp) fuse for at least 3 seconds to erase ABS control unit memory. Turn the ignition key to RUN position and recheck. Memory is erased if connector is disconnected from ABS control unit or ABS control unit is removed from the body.
