Safety Indicator Unit

  1. Turn ignition on. Safety indicator lights should come on for 2 seconds. If light(s) stay on, this indicates a door or trunk lid is open. Brake light bulbs are also monitored by the safety indicator unit. If a brake light bulb burns out, a failure sensor relay (located at each taillight assembly) will open the signal circuit and the "BRAKE LAMP" indicator will illuminate. If the safety indicator unit does not work as described, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove lower left dash cover. Disconnect wiring from safety indicator. Ensure Black wire has continuity to ground. See Fig 1 . If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire or poor ground connection. See WIRING DIAGRAMS.

  3. Turn ignition on. Check for battery voltage between Yellow wire and ground. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check fuse No. 13 (7.5-amp) or open in Yellow wire. Repair as necessary.
  4. Turn ignition off. Press brake pedal down. Check White/Green wire for continuity to ground. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, check fuse No. 39 (20-amp), brakelight switch, brakelight bulbs, brakelight failure sensor relay(s), ground circuit in trunk or open in White/Green wire. Repair as necessary.
  5. Remove fuse No. 57 (15-amp). Open trunk lid. Check Green/Black wire for continuity to ground. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, check trunk latch switch, ground circuit in trunk or open in Green/Black wire. Repair as necessary.
  6. Turn ignition on. Turn headlight switch on and dimmer switch to full bright. Check for battery voltage between Red/Black wire and Red wire. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check dash light dimmer control system, or open in Red/Black or Red wires. Repair as necessary.
  7. Turn ignition off. Remove fuse No. 57 (15-amp). Open left front door. Check Green/Blue wire for continuity to ground. Open right front door. Check Green/Red wire for continuity to ground. Open left rear door. Check Green/Yellow wire for continuity to ground. Open right rear door. Check Green/White wire for continuity to ground.
  8. If continuity does not exist, check appropriate door switch or for open in Green/blue wire, Green/Red wire, Green/Yellow wire and Green/White wire. Repair as necessary. If continuity exists and safety indicator system still does not work, replace safety indicator unit.
