Dash Light Dimmer Control

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove 2 screws from instrument cluster bezel. Pull out instrument cluster bezel far enough to disconnect electrical connectors (one on left side and 2 on right side). Remove instrument cluster bezel.
  2. Measure resistance between dimmer switch terminals "A" and "B" while rotating dimmer dial. See Fig 1 . Resistance should vary 0-20,000 ohms. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace dimmer switch.

  3. Disconnect dash light dimmer control unit 7-pin connector, located behind left side of radio. See Fig 2 . Check for continuity between connector Black wire and ground. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire or poor ground connection. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. With headlight switch on, check for battery voltage between 7-pin connector Red/Black wire and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check fuse No. 49 (15-amp), taillight relay, headlight switch, or for open in Red/Black wire. Repair as necessary.
  5. With headlight switch on, use a jumper wire to ground 7-pin connector Red wire. If instrument lights come on, go to next step. If instrument lights do not come on, repair open in Red/Black wire or Red wire from 7-pin connector.
  6. Measure resistance between 7-pin connector Red/Green wire and Red/Blue wire. Resistance should vary between 0-20,000 ohms when dimmer control dial is rotated. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in Red/Green or Red/Blue wire or replace faulty dash light dimmer control unit.
  7. Inspect connection between 7-pin connector and dash light dimmer control unit. If connection is okay, temporarily substitute known good dimmer control unit. Recheck operation of dimmer control system. If system operates properly, replace dimmer control unit.
