Preliminary Inspection

Diagnosis of shift interlock system should begin with a general visual inspection of related components, i.e., fuses, shift linkage, electrical connections, components, etc. If the shift lock solenoid clicks when stepping on the brake pedal with the ignition switch ON and the shift lever in Park, the shift lock system is electronically OK. If the shift lever cannot be shifted from Park position, see GEAR POSITION SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS.
