Checking Fuel Pump Operation (1993-94)

If you suspect a problem with the fuel pump, check that the fuel pump actually runs. When it is on, you will hear some noise if you hold your ear to the fuel fill port with the fuel fill cap removed. The fuel pump should run for two seconds when the ignition switch is first turned to ON. If the fuel pump does not make noise, check as follows:

  1. Remove the bulkhead panels located behind the seats.
  2. CAUTION: Be sure to turn the ignition switch to OFF before disconnecting the wires.

  3. Disconnect the C489, 6-pin connector, located behind the seat back panels. See Fig 1 .
  4. Disconnect the PGM-FI main relay connector and connect terminal No. 5 (BLK/YEL wire) and terminal No. 7 (BLK/YEL wire) with a jumper wire. See Figure .
  5. With the positive probe to the BLK/YEL wire and the negative probe to the BLK wire, check that there is battery voltage at the C489 (fuel pump) connector when the ignition switch is turned to ON position.
  6. If there is battery voltage, replace the fuel pump.
  7. If there is no voltage, check the fuel pump ground and wire harness.
