Code 6-1, Front Fail-Safe Relay Circuit

  1. Remove and test front fail-safe relay. See RELAY TEST under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING  . Replace relay if it is defective. If relay is okay, turn ignition on. Measure voltage between Yellow/Black wire of fail-safe relay and ground.
  2. If no battery voltage exists, repair open Yellow/Black wire between fuse No. 3 and front fail-safe relay. If battery voltage is present, turn ignition off and disconnect 10-pin connector from solenoids. Connector is located on right side of engine compartment, near shock tower.
  3. Using DVOM, check for continuity between Brown/Black wire of fail-safe relay and ground. If no continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short in Brown/Black wire between solenoid and front fail-safe relay.
  4. Check for continuity at solenoid connector (solenoid side) between Brown/Black wire and ground and between Brown/Blue wire and ground. If no continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity exists, solenoid is defective.
  5. Disconnect 18-pin and 12-pin connectors from control unit. Check for continuity at 12-pin connector between ground and Red/Black, Yellow/Black, Red/Blue and Yellow/Blue wires. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists in any wire, repair short in wire having continuity between solenoid and control unit connector.
  6. Remove rear fail-safe relay. Check for continuity at 18-pin connector between Yellow/Green wire and ground. If continuity exists, repair short in Yellow/Green wire control unit connector and front fail-safe relay. If no continuity exists, reinstall front fail-safe relay and turn ignition on.
  7. Measure voltage at 18-pin connector between Yellow/Black wire and ground. If no battery voltage exists, repair open Yellow/Black wire between ABS control unit and front fail-safe relay. If battery voltage is present, check for loose control unit connectors. If connectors are okay, install a known good control unit and retest.
