Shift Interlock System
- To check system operation, ensure shift lever is in Park. Turn ignition on. Depress brake pedal with accelerator pedal in idle position.
- If shift lock solenoid clicks, system is working properly. If shift lock solenoid fails to click, proceed to next step. If shift lever cannot be moved from Park, check for proper installation of shift lock solenoid. See SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If shift lock solenoid installation is okay, check shift cable and shift components at transaxle.
- Disconnect 8-pin connector from interlock control unit. Interlock control unit is located behind center of instrument panel. See Figure .
- Turn ignition on and depress brake pedal. Using voltmeter, check voltage between White/Red wire of 8-pin connector and ground. Battery voltage should exist.
- With brake pedal still depressed, depress accelerator pedal. Ensure brake pedal and accelerator are held down at the same time. Check voltage between White/Red wire of 8-pin connector and ground. Battery voltage should not exist.
- If voltage readings in step 4 and 5 are as specified, proceed to step 8 . If voltage readings are not as specified, check for defective No. 37 fuse (20-amp) in engine compartment fuse box, located at passengers side rear corner of engine compartment. If fuse is okay, check for defective wiring
- If wiring is okay, check for defective brakelight switch or throttle position sensor. See BRAKELIGHT SWITCH and THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR under COMPONENT TESTS. If all components are okay and wiring circuits are okay, substitute TCM and recheck operation.
- Ensure shift lever is in Park. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between Green/White wire of 8-pin connector and ground. Continuity should exist. If continuity exists, proceed to step 11 .
- If continuity does not exist, check the A/T gear position switch. See A/T GEAR POSITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If A/T gear position switch is okay, check for defective wiring or ground connection G301 or G401.
- Ground connection G301 is located at front corner of engine compartment, on inner fender panel. Ground connection G401 is located behind drivers side of instrument panel, above kick panel. See Figure and Figure .
- Ensure ignition is on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between Yellow/Black wire of 8-pin connector and ground. If battery voltage exists, wiring circuit is okay.
- If battery voltage does not exist, check No. 23 fuse (7.5-amp) in fuse box on drivers side of instrument panel, near kick panel. If fuse is okay, check wiring circuit. If wiring circuit is okay, check shift lock solenoid. See SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID under COMPONENT TESTS.
