Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal

- Disconnect battery cables. Remove hood hinge stops. Secure hood in vertical position. DO NOT remove hood. Raise and support vehicle. Drain engine oil and transmission fluid. Remove front wheels and splash shield. Remove radiator cap to release system pressure. Drain cooling system. Remove battery and battery tray.
- Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE. Remove fuel inlet hose. Unplug harness connectors from distributor. Remove distributor. Remove intake air duct and air cleaner housing. Unplug engine wiring harness connectors on left side of engine compartment. Disconnect throttle cable.
- Unplug engine wiring harness connectors on right side of engine compartment. Disconnect power cables from underhood fuse/relay box. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose from intake manifold. Disconnect fuel return hose. Disconnect ground cable at cylinder head. Remove power steering pump with hoses attached. Set power steering pump aside.
- Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached, and set it aside. Remove alternator. Disconnect transmission cooler lines. Remove radiator and heater hoses. Remove speed sensor, leaving hoses attached. Unplug cooling fan connectors. Remove radiator.
- Remove exhaust pipe. Disconnect drive shafts. See information in AXLE SHAFTS - FRONT article in DRIVE AXLES section. On M/T models, disconnect clutch cable, shift rod, and shift lever torque rod. On A/T models, remove torque converter cover and disconnect shift control cable.
- On all models, attach chain hoist to engine. Raise hoist to take all slack from chain. Remove rear transmission mount and rear transmission mounting bracket. Remove front transmission mount. Remove side transmission mount and side transmission mounting bracket. Remove side engine mount.
- Slowly raise engine/transaxle about 6 inches. Ensure all hoses and wiring have been disconnected. Carefully remove engine and transaxle from vehicle.
