Component Disassembly & Reassembly: Countershaft: Reassembly

  1. Install thrust shim and 1st gear needle bearings. In the following order, install: 1st gear, friction damper, synchro ring and spring. Install 1st/2nd hub and reverse gear. Install synchro ring. On 1.7L, install 3-piece ring set. Install friction damper, spacer collar, needle bearing, 2nd and 3rd gear. Ensure friction dampers are properly indexed to mating grooves.
  2. Support countershaft on a steel block. Using 40-mm Driver (07746-0030100) and 35-mm Adapter (07746-0030400), press on 4th gear. Press 5th gear on countershaft with Driver and 30-mm Adapter (07746-0030300). Install needle bearing.
  3. Install ball bearing using a press. Install spring washer; tighten lock nut to 80 ft. lbs. (108 N.m) then stake NEW lock nut tab into groove. See Fig 3 .
