Removal & Installation: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative and then positive battery cable. Remove battery. Remove air intake hose and battery base. Disconnect starter wiring. Remove starter retaining bolts and starter. Disconnect transaxle ground strap. Leaving hydraulic hose attached, remove speed sensor.
  2. Disconnect lock-up control solenoid valve connectors. Drain transaxle fluid. Disconnect and plug transaxle cooler lines. Remove center crossmember. Remove exhaust header pipe. Turn ignition switch to release steering lock. Place transaxle in Neutral.
  3. Remove left and right axle shafts. See AXLE SHAFTS - FRONT article in DRIVE AXLES. Remove intermediate shaft. Remove engine and right wheelwell splash shields. Remove right damper bolt, and separate damper from damper fork.
  4. Remove right radius rod. Remove front and rear engine stiffeners. Remove flywheel inspection cover and shift cable holder. Disconnect shift cable by removing cotter pin, control pin and control lever roller. Remove shift cable guide. Remove drive plate bolts one at a time.
  5. Remove bolt from front engine mount. Remove mounting bolts from rear engine mount bracket. Remove front and rear transaxle housing mounting bolts. Loosen differential housing mounting bolts. Attach a hoist to transaxle housing hoist bracket and differential housing-to-engine mounting bolt. Lift engine slightly to unload mounts.
  6. Place a jack under transaxle, and raise transaxle just enough to take weight off mounts. Remove front engine mount. Remove transaxle mount and mount bracket bolts. Pull transaxle away from engine until it clears dowel pins, and then lower it on jack.
