ENGINE SKIP
An intermittent engine skip at idle or during acceleration may be the result of carbon tracking on plugs, plug wires, the distributor cap, or the coil. On any vehicle, a "skip" can occur if voltage travels across a carbon track instead of between the electrode gap on the plug. (Remember, electricity always follows the path of least resistance.)
Here's where to look for carbon tracking.
SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES
- Remove each plug boot, and look for small white flash marks on the wire and the boot, especially near the plug end. Then remove the spark plugs and look for carbon tracking on the porcelain insulators. See Fig 1 .
DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND COIL
- Remove the cap, and look for tracking inside and out. Then inspect the coil for tracking. See Fig 2 .
NOTE:
Whenever you find carbon tracking (or any other damage), replace the affected part(s).
