Valve Guide Inspection
- Measure valve stem-to-valve guide clearance using a dial indicator placed on valve head. Zero dial indicator, and rock valve stem side-to-side. If reading exceeds specification, recheck using a new valve. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
- If reading is within specification after checking with new valve, replace old valve. If reading still exceeds limit, recheck using following method. Record difference between diameter of valve stem and inside diameter of valve guide. Take measurements in 3 places. If readings exceed service limit, replace both valve and valve guide. See CYLINDER HEAD table.
CAUTION:
DO NOT
use a torch to heat cylinder head as it could cause warpage. DO NOT
heat cylinder head warmer than 300°F (150°C); this may loosen valve seats.
