Steering Column: Reassembly
- Insert upper bushing (if removed). Install column thrust ring. Insert steering shaft from bottom of column. Place snap ring into position over steering shaft.
- Apply electrical grease to horn contact and snap into side of steering column. Apply grease to lower end of steering shaft and inside column. Push hanger bushing into bottom end of column as far as possible.
- Install plastic collar over bottom end of steering column by aligning projection with hole in column. Slide plastic collar onto column until projection fits into hole.NOTE: When installing tilt steering gear, coat all parts with grease before installation.
- Install bending plate base on steering column. With 10 mm washer on tilt lever assembly, install assembly into bending plate base. Install spin stopper on tilt lever assembly shaft. Install stopper collar over spin stopper.
- Install column hanger springs. Install tilt lock (reverse thread) nut and tighten to 60 INCH. lbs. (7 N.m). Slide stopper collar towards tilt lock nut. If stopper collar cannot be move toward the tilt lock nut, turn tilt lock nut counterclockwise until stopper collar can slide next to tilt lock nut.
- Place steering collar in a soft jawed vise. With tilt lever handle pulled out and using a hanging scale attached 1.38" (35 mm) from the end of the handle. measure tilt lever tension preload.
- Preload should be between 11-19 Ft. lbs. (15-26 N.m). If not within specification, slide stopper collar to spin stopper and turn tilt lock nut one spline at a time in either direction.
- Slide stopper collar back onto tilt lock nut. Recheck preload tension. If incorrect tension is measured, continue turning tilt lock nut one spline at a time until until proper tension specification is met.
- With stopper collar in place over tilt lock nut, slip stopper clip over spin stopper. Tighten clip retaining screw. Install upper column holder and bending plate on steering column with rubber bands.
