Description Of Self-Diagnostics

NOTE: Before starting testing or trouble shooting, ensure other items that affect engine performance are within specifications. Check valve clearance, air cleaner and PCV valve. In addition, check ignition timing, function of vacuum and centrifugal advance, and condition of spark plugs. It is also necessary to obtain System Checker Harness (07999- PD60000A ) to test components.

When the PGM-FI warning light has been reported on, turn the ignition on, move the front passenger seat to the rear position and observe the LED on the front of the ECU. The LED indicates a system failure code by blinking frequency. See Fig 1

Code 2, 4, 11, or exceeds Code 14, count the number of blinks again. If the indicator is in fact, blinking these codes, substitute a known-good ECU and re-check. If the indicator goes away, replace the original ECU.

The PGM-FI dash warning light and ECU LED may come on, indicating a system problem, when, in fact, there is a good or intermittent electrical connection. First, check the electrical connections, clean or repair connections if necessary.

If the inspection for a particular failure code requires the system checker harness, remove the front passenger seat and connect the system checker harness and multimeter as shown in Fig 2 . Then check the system according to the procedure described for the appropriate code(s) listed in the following figures.

CAUTION: Puncturing the insulation on a wire can cause poor or intermittent electrical connections. For testing at connectors other than the system checker harness, bring the tester probe into contact with the terminal from the connector side of wire harness connectors in the engine compartment. For female connectors, just toch lightly w/the tester probe and do not insert the probe. See Fig 3 .
