- Pull up the control lever assembly boot to disengage from the console.
- Move the shift lever to the 5th/Reverse gate and use a 3/8" punch to hold in place. See Fig 1
.
NOTE:
Note the original position of the A.I.R. components.
- Remove the clamp from the A.I.R. hose behind the cooling fan.
- Separate the A.I.R. tube from the hose and push the tube back towards the transaxle. See Fig 2

- Remove the hose clip holding the 2 power steering lines together. See Fig 3
.
- Lock the transaxle shift control shaft in the 5th/Reverse gate. There is a hole on top of the transaxle that will have either a spring loaded locking pin or a hole plug. See Fig 4
.
- If the hole has a spring loaded locking pin, depress the pin to lock the transaxle shift control shaft in the 5th/Reverse gate.
- If the hole has a plug in it, remove the plug and insert the shift linkage lock pin in the hole to lock the transaxle shift control shaft in the 5th/Reverse gate. If the plug is not damage, it can be reused.
CAUTION:
If you cannot depress the pin or fully install the shift linkage lock pin, loosen the pinch bolt securing the control assembly rod to the control shaft lever assembly.
- Rotate the transaxle shift control shaft clockwise, toward the passenger side of vehicle, until the locking pin can be depressed, or the shift linkage lock pin can be fully installed.
- Tighten the pinch bolt securing the control assembly rod to control shaft lever assembly. See Fig 5
. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Release the transaxle shift control shaft. See Fig 4
.
- If the transaxle has a spring loaded locking pin, remove the punch from the shift lever and rock the lever back and forth until the lever can be moved freely.
- If there was a plug in the transaxle hole, remove the punch from the shift lever, remove the shift linkage lock pin, and install the plug.
CAUTION:
If the transaxle hole plug was damaged during removal, install the new plug during assembly.
- Install the hose clip to the 2 power steering lines. See Fig 3
.
- Pull the A.I.R. tube back to the original position.
CAUTION:
The clamp must be installed with the locking portion facing down.
- Insert the tube into the hose and install the clamp. See Fig 2
.
NOTE:
There is a stand-off clip between the A.I.R. tube and the wiring harness at the front of the transaxle. This must be in place to eliminate the possibility of chafing between the tube and the harness.
- Ensure the stand-off clip between the A.I.R. tube and the wiring harness is installed correctly. See Fig 6
.
- Snap the control lever boot into the console opening.
