Diagnostic System Check - Engine Cooling

  1. Install a scan tool. Does the scan tool power up? If so, go to next step. If not, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  2. NOTE: Lack of communication may be due to a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to establish communication with the following control modules:
    • Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)
    • Dash Integration Module (DIM)
    • Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
    Does the scan tool communicate with the control modules? If so, go to next step. If not, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. NOTE: Determine if the control modules have set DTCs which may affect Engine Cooling operation are present.
  5. Select the IPC, DIM and the PCM display DTC function on the scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs? If so, go to next step. If not, go to SYMPTOMS - ENGINE COOLING  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  6. NOTE: The presence of DTCs which begin with "U" indicate some other module is not communicating. The specified procedure will compile all the available information before tests are performed.
  7. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with a "U"? If so, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If not, go to next step.
  8. Does the scan tool display DTC P1258, P0480, or P0481? If so, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If not, go to next step.
  9. Does the scan tool display DTC B1000, B1004, B1007, or B1009? If so, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If not, go to next step.
  10. Does the scan tool display DTC B1327, B1513, or B1514? If so, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in BODY CONTROL MODULES article under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If not, go to appropriate article for DTC diagnosis.
