Steering Column: Removal

  1. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Remove 2 steering wheel screw covers. See Fig 1. Loosen steering wheel pad screws until groove along screw circumference catches on screw case.
    WARNING: Place steering wheel pad (air bag module) face up while working on vehicle. DO NOT attempt to disassemble air bag module. Severe injury or damage may occur if air bag accidentally deploys.
  2. Lift steering wheel pad (air bag module) from steering wheel, and disconnect air bag (squib) harness connector. Place steering wheel pad on a flat surface, with pad cover facing upward. Remove steering wheel securing nut. Before removing steering wheel, reference mark steering wheel in relation to steering shaft for reassembly. Using steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel from column.
  3. Remove 3 screws securing upper and lower steering column covers and remove covers. Disconnect harness connectors from combination switch. Remove screws and combination switch with spiral cable. Remove scuff plate. Remove clip and remove cowl trim.
  4. Disconnect harness connector and remove cluster finish panel. Remove 2 screws and disconnect hood release lever from lower panel. Remove 2 screws and disconnect fuel lid release lever from lower panel. Remove pad set screw and remove No. 1 lower panel. Remove 4 bolts securing left lower panel and remove panel.
  5. Remove one screw securing heater duct to register duct and remove duct. Make alignment marks on No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and control shaft before disassembly. Loosen upper sliding yoke-to-intermediate shaft assembly bolt. Remove lower bolt securing sliding yoke to No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly, and bolt securing No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly to control shaft.
  6. Remove No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly. Remove 4 bolts securing hole cover and remove cover. Disconnect harness connectors. Loosen hose clamp. Remove 4 nuts securing steering column assembly and remove steering column assembly.
  7. Remove upper sliding yoke-to-intermediate shaft assembly bolt. Remove thrust stopper. Remove sliding yoke. Remove hose clamp and No. 2 hole cover.
