Steering Gear

  1. If necessary, install outer tie rods onto inner tie rod threads. As outer tie rods are installed, count out same number rotations as were counted on tie rod removal. This will get toe setting somewhat close to specification before vehicle is aligned at end of this procedure. Snug tie rod jam nuts on both ends of gear. Do not tighten at this time. Tighten tie rod jam nuts to specification while performing wheel alignment at end of this procedure.

  2. Center steering gear mounting bosses over mounting holes in crossmember and install steering gear mounting bolts (3) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Raise crossmember into position.
  4. Install the six bolts (1) securing the crossmember to the body. Tighten mounting bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  5. On each side of the vehicle, install the front crossmember bolts (2) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. On the right side of the vehicle, install the bolt securing the lower splash shield to the crossmember.

  7. Install the rear side transmission strut mount bolt (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  8. Position the power steering pressure and return line routing clamps on the rear of the crossmember.
  9. Install the pressure and return lines (1, 3) to the steering gear and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. Install the heat shield and the four bolts (2) to the steering gear and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  11. On both sides of vehicle, install the lower control arms to the ball joints.
  12. Install a NEW nut (3) attaching lower control arm to ball joint (1) by holding rod end stud stationary while tightening nut with a wrench. Using a crowfoot wrench on a torque wrench, and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to FRONT, TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  13. On both sides of vehicle, install each outer tie rod end (1) to the knuckle.

  14. Install a NEW nut (3) attaching outer tie rod to knuckle by holding rod end stud stationary while tightening nut (3) with a wrench. Using a crowfoot wrench on a torque wrench and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  15. At each end of stabilizer bar, install nut (2) securing link to the lower control arm and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to FRONT, TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  16. On each side of vehicle, install tire and wheel assembly. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  17. Lower vehicle.

  18. Slide intermediate shaft (1) onto steering gear shaft.
  19. Install pinch bolt (2) securing intermediate shaft to steering gear shaft and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  20. Connect negative battery cable (1) on negative battery post.
  21. Install the battery access cover.
  22. Remove steering wheel holder.
  23. Fill and bleed power steering system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  24. Inspect for leaks.
  25. Set toe to specifications. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
